Sleep and Energy

During the state of sleep, the life energy (prāṇa) withdraws inwardly from the senses and concentrates in the medulla oblongata, where it attracts cosmic energy into the body to sustain and revitalise it whilst the physical body passively sleeps to be recharged and rejuvenated. When you sleep well (both quantity and quality are important) you wake up feeling refreshed and alert, leaving your body and mind rejuvenated for your daily activities.

Deep sleep – A clue to understanding your own real nature

"The soul’s nature is Bliss – a lasting inner state

of ever-new, ever-changing joy, which eternally

entertains without changing the one entertained

even when he passes through the trials

of physical suffering or death."

Paramhansa Yogananda.

After a hard day’s work, you feel quite exhausted or perhaps unhappy. But after a night’s deep sleep, you can say, “I slept well.” You feel refreshed and rejuvenated to start a new day. This shows that deep sleep brings us a sense of happiness and peace with it. This is a clue to understanding your own real nature. In deep sleep there is an absence of all mental activity, you do not know anything objective, the ego is not present, and there is no conception of time. In sleep your knowledge, and time and space disappear. Your individuality disappears, but you, as Consciousness does not disappear. You, the inner Self, which is Consciousness, pure Happiness or Joy and Peace itself, are all alone there shining within. You have no knowledge of yourself in that deep sleep state, so you can never know that, when you are that. Happiness is experienced in deep sleep, but you only become aware of that experience when you return to the waking state. Experience is always beyond the mind. You, or the personal ‘I’ knows it only when the ‘I’ comes to that realm of the mind.

In the dream state, time is created by you, whereas in deep sleep you are not aware of time or space. You do not know where you are or have any concept of time. Whatever is created in your dreams is born of your own knowledge, you cannot create something that is totally unknown. Consciousness is not bound by or subject to any limitation of time or space. Consciousness being subjective, whole and limitless is always now, in the present moment. Everything else is an object of consciousness.

Deep sleep can be utilised directly for establishing yourself in your real nature. To get to your true essential nature, that is ever-existing, ever-conscious, ever-new bliss (sat-cit-ānanda), there has to be relaxation of the mind from all forms of activity, whilst simultaneously remaining aware of the happiness and peace experienced in deep sleep. So, just before you sleep and as soon as you awake from sleep, empty your mind of all intruding thoughts and keep your mind absorbed and established only in the thought of your real divine nature, and know that everything other than your real nature (the Self, the Ultimate Reality) is a dream.
